Glossary
SGTIN (Serialised GTIN)
A GTIN combined with a unique serial number, identifying one specific physical item rather than a product line.
SGTINs are essential for any use case where each individual unit needs its own digital identity — counterfeit detection, ownership transfer, warranty registration, per-unit DPPs, or loyalty mechanics tied to a specific item.
Serialisation lets a brand answer questions like 'has this exact bottle been scanned before?' or 'who owns this watch right now?' — questions a plain GTIN cannot.
