Glossary
GTIN (Global Trade Item Number)
The unique numeric identifier assigned to a product by GS1 — the same number encoded in every retail barcode in the world.
A GTIN identifies a product variant (size, colour, pack size) but not an individual unit. It's the foundation for retail scanning, e-commerce listings, and now for GS1 Digital Link and Digital Product Passports.
For serialised use cases like authentication or per-unit DPPs, GTINs are extended into SGTINs (Serialised GTINs) so each physical item carries a unique serial in addition to the product code.
