Right to Repair

The Right to Repair legislation is a new UK government policy aimed at giving consumers greater access to information and parts needed to repair their electronic devices.

The legislation requires manufacturers and brands to provide repair manuals, diagnostic tools, and spare parts to consumers and independent repair providers. This is a shift from the previous status quo where manufacturers were often able to maintain tight control over the repair process, limiting consumer choice while driving up costs.

Championing the Consumer

While these laws are a step in the right direction, there’s still more that can be done to protect consumers. Let’s delve into what these laws mean for you and explore Prove Anything’s solution and the additional functionality we support.

Under the new regulations, manufacturers are now required to provide spare parts for washing machines, washer-dryers, dishwashers, refrigerators, and TVs. What’s more, repairs should be possible using everyday tools, ensuring that you have the freedom to fix your appliances yourself. These changes are aimed at tackling the alarming 1.5 million tonnes of electrical waste generated annually in the UK.

What Appliances are Covered?

The ‘right to repair’ laws only currently apply to dishwashers, washing machines, washer-dryers, refrigeration appliances, and televisions.

These laws also encompass non-consumer electronics, such as light sources, electric motors, refrigerators in supermarkets, vending machines, power transformers, and welding equipment.

However, it’s important to note that appliances like cookers, hobs, tumble dryers, microwaves, laptops, and smartphones are not currently covered by the legislation. Prove Anything and a number of other organisations are putting forward solutions to accelerate the adoption of Right to Repair for these vital everyday appliances, and beyond!
